Part 17 returned for the 4k release of Rocky the Knockout Collection and Magic Mike’s Last Dance. We are back for Part 18 and the Superman 5 Film Collection, Creed III and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Superman 5 Film Collection

Not only is this collection the original Superman films from the late 70s and early 80s in 4k but it includes the director’s cut of Superman II! This is the version Richard Donner had envisioned from the start. It includes a new opening and end to the film along with scenes focusing on expanding on established lore between Clark and his father. This is how the film SHOULD have always been. Of these five films the original was always my favorite but this cut makes my second choice the new number one!

Creed III

Some have said that this is by far the best Creed film in the franchise but the fight with the Russian is still my favorite. Visually the director handled the final fight differently than many others had over the years by having the crowd fading away to images of both fighter’s pasts. This deviation from the formula was a much needed change to keep it from getting as stale. I know we talked about the problems with Majors with his role in the latest Ant-Man but I don’t see that having the same level of impact here. Overall I enjoyed the film which still feels weird considering I am not a fan of boxing or other professional fighting sports. The cast proves to be far superior to the original Rocky films and if they continue like this I won’t mind watching future sequels.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

It was difficult to get excited about this film knowing that this is likely the end of the franchise and as far as I’m aware the upcoming Flash movie will be the end of this cinematic universe. The film chronologically follows after Black Adam and features some cameos that would have been exciting had it not been for the pending end to the universe. The film is a fitting sequel to the first Shazam film but with one glaring mistake, the transformation of Shazam himself leaving him dumber than his human counterpart Billy. Other than that mistake with what I assume is the writing and directing, the film was still a good amount of fun and without the creepy monsters is also a better film to watch with younger family members.

Bones and All

What limited trailers I had seen hinted at something dark happening in the story of this film but focused on a central theme of travelling and love. There was nothing in them I saw that indicated that this is a love story about two cannibals. Despite feeling a little misled at the start I wasn’t upset. The film was great over all. I found it odd how well the love story mixed with horror but they blend perfectly.

Training Day (4K)

As expected from the title, this is the 4k release of the Training Day, the same film that Denzel Washington won an Academy Award for. Despite it’s age the film still holds up just as well as it did back when it first came out.

House Party

Listed as a “Remix” of the 90s classic film of the same name, this is truly a reboot. This time around our characters are played by a new cast and a throwing the party in the home of Lebron James. They are both house cleaners and failing party planners assigned to clean the James house. They decide to throw a party and things get a bit nuts. Overall we found the film to be enjoyable, laughs aplenty with a few dragging moments.

Black Adam

This is the final installment of the current iteration of the DCCU after the changes at Warner Bros and the first to include Black Adam. Knowing how The Rock tends to play comedic roles I was expecting this very serious character to be more campy that he would be in the comics. I am happy to say this is not the case. He gave the character the look and feel we hoped for from the comics. I didn’t know much about Adam’s history other than him being tied to Shazam in some way so getting to see this in depth made the character more interesting. The story follows Adam’s return to the world as he is called to save his country from tyrants once again. With the serious tones of the story, great effects and some better acting than we normally see in a DC film I thought this one was a total win!

Don’t Worry Darling

Having been invited to live in the idealized community Victory, Alice and her husband join what seems to be the perfect community. She begins to question things as they start to fall apart around her. The story itself very much reminded me of Hex Wives by Ben Blacker and that’s a good thing. That storyline was amazing. Florence Pugh plays Alice and does a beyond amazing job and is worth seeing the film alone for her. The film as a whole was great as well.

Elvis

Personally I’ve never been a fan of Elvis’ movies or music but many in both sides of my family were. The production value of this film is beyond anything I ever expected. They managed to take a person I never liked and keep me glued to the screen. The cast was fantastic from start to finish. Having never known anything about his personal story other than his death it makes me wonder how accurate was the film? Would I watch this film again? Not likely. Did I enjoy it? I did, surprisingly, I did.

Poltergeist

Growing up I hated scary movies and this was one I avoided because it scared the hell out of friends I considered braver than myself. This is the 4k release of that same classic film and now that I’ve developed an appreciation for the horror genre I can’t think of a better time to watch it. Having watched it finally I didn’t find it particularly frightening but was impressed the quality of the effects for when this film was first produced. The finale was really impressive to say the least and I enjoyed the movie overall.

The Lost Boys

This is the cult classic film all about vampires in a small town. I had seen it only once previously and thought it wasn’t bad but watching it again in 4k it was much better than I remembered. Now it’s time to get my wife to watch it.

DC League of Super Pets

This family film follows Krypto as he deals with Superman’s falling in love and what it means as the pet of the Man of Steel. The animation was top notch and the film was great fun.

Dune

This film is the first half of the latest adaptation of the novel but by far the most faithful we have yet to receive. This was always one of my favorite series and I only had one complaint- that we didn’t receive the full adaptation in a single release. I would have gladly sat through the full 4-6 hours it would have taken to watch it in it’s entirety.

Matrix: Resurrections

In the previous Matrix film Neo and Trinity sacrificed themselves to save the day. The film picks up with a video game designer who looks like Neo with flashes of events from the previous films and it seems like these are all part of a video game he designed. Things get crazier as we dive deeper into this meta rabbit hole and it was a fantastic ride all the way until the end.

The Batman

All heroes have to start somewhere and this is the Batman’s start. His first “super villain” and his first major case, all before the gadgets and masking of his voice. Sure it is yet another retelling of his origin but in the end this film was a fantastic story and was told wonderfully. I hope this same creative team gets the chance to do more.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

This is the first film since we had Depp replaced and yet Ezra Miller still kept his role. The film follows Dumbledore as he brings together a team to fight Grindelwald and along the way clash with his follows and encounter new and old beasts. I continue to love the films in this universe but wish that we could have done so with maintaining the original cast.

Dog

Army Ranger Briggs and a dog named Lulu travel towards a funeral and along the way have to survive each other. The film does something that has been ignored for too long, focus on the psychological damage and necessity for healing after experiencing war. For this alone it is worth a watch but it is an amusing buddy comedy otherwise.

We have returned for Part 10 and no better way to celebrate this milestone than to go big with The Outsiders, Cry Macho, Malignant, the Many Saints of Newark and the Mad Max film collection.

The Outsiders

The original film does not hold a candle to the book but this edition of the film also comes with the Complete Novel edition so you can actually watch the entirety of the story. With this addition it makes it much better but even then I still preferred the actual novel to the film.

Cry Macho

This was an odd film for me. I am not typically a fan of Clint Eastwood as a writer, actor or director but somehow I still give his films a chance. I went into this expecting to dislike it but hoping it would surprise me like The Mule did. After finishing it I felt it was okay at best but when describing it to my wife the next morning I realized there was a lot to it that I did enjoy. The film follows a aging cowboy that is sent to Mexico to retrieve the son of a rancher he sometimes worked for. Begrudgingly he goes and finds the boy and works towards bringing him to his father, along the way falling in love with a small community and it’s people. After analyzing the film I must admit it was surprisingly good.

Malignant

As time goes on I am learning to appreciate horror films and the trailers for this film looked fantastic. The story follows a person with some abilities and horribly disfigured is reportedly euthanized in the opening scene but not before killing several members of the hospital staff. Fast forward several years Madison is pregnant and had a long day of work at the hospital. Responding to her being abused a mysterious killer appears and murders her boyfriend. She is then tortured as she can somehow see the killer’s actions as he murders the people who attempted to kill him many years prior. This was a fantastic film that had some very impressive effects when Madison begins to see where the killer is, blending the room she is in with the room the killer is. This film is worth watching for the effects alone but coupled with an interesting story and a strong cast and you have a winner.

The Many Saints of Newark

I have never seen even one episode of The Sopranos but seeing how Tony became the mob boss was intriguing. The cast of this film were fantastic and despite not knowing the source material it was still an enjoyable film.

Mad Max film collection

Growing up I thought there were only two Mad Max films prior to Fury Road- Beyond Thunderdome and Road Warrior. I had no idea the film that started it all even existed- Mad Max. Getting to watch them again was a treat but none of them compare to Fury Road in my opinion.

The Suicide Squad

This is the first film in the DC cinematic universe by James Gunn, and hopefully not the last. The squad has been assembled to remove another threat to the world, this time with two squads. Once again Margot steals the show as Harley Quinn as her team tries to rescue her. Out of the current cinematic universe this is by far THE BEST installment yet. It is even a close second behind Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Reminiscence

Global warming has caused the world to flood and with it the military and law enforcement have begun utilizing the ability to view memories at command. Nick, played by Hugh Jackman, is a private investigator skilled in the process of viewing these memories and calling up specific details to either help with a case, help a woman relive time with a past love or even as simple as helping a woman find her keys. The story is wonderfully told and really captures Nick’s desperation as he tries to find the woman he loves.

Recently the fine folks at Warner Bros (their home page is here) had sent me codes to some of their movies I missed so that I could share my thoughts on them with you. For the first part of this series we talked about Scoob, Birds of Prey, The Way Back, Goonies 4K, Beetlejuice 4K, Full Metal Jacket, Sherlock Holmes 4K and Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows 4K. Part 2 ‘twas massive and discussed V for Vendetta 4K, 300 4K, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy 4K, The Hobbit Trilogy 4K, Blade 4K, Bill and Ted Face the Music, Tenet and The Wolf of Snow Hollow. Part 3 talked about Wonder Woman 1984, The Little Things and Judas and the Black Messiah. Part 4 discussed Tom and Jerry the Movie and Godzilla Vs Kong. Part 5 was all about Wrath of Man, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Space Jam. Part 6 had discussed Mortal Kombat and Those Who Wish Me Dead. Part 7 discussed In the Heights, The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 20 Years of Movie Magic edition. We are back with Part 8 to discuss A Clockwork Orange, Space Jam: A New Legacy and Shawshank Redemption!

A Clockwork Orange

This is the 4k release of the original Stanley Kubrick film. The story follows a group of thugs where one of their members gets captured and tortured, brainwashing him into having a negative reaction towards violence and sex. The movie can be a bit intense at parts but looks even better in 4k. The first time I watched this (in high school) it seemed a bit out there and didn’t really understand why it was so celebrated at the time. Now (as an adult with my own children) I can respect what the film did at the time but the graphic nature has become overshadowed by modern cinema.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Expectations for this sequel were quite low. Like most sequels I assumed we see a repeat of the same concept with a few new characters. Basically that is what we got but it was surprisingly better. The story follows an algorithm made to maximize profits for the future of Warner Brothers and it’s latest idea is using Lebron James in some new projects with the media corporation. Refusing the project the algorithm tricks him into entering into the WB servers digitally along with his son. It convinces his son to create a game and challenges Lebron to that game, winner would decide the fate of most of the world. I found it to be more of a family story than the first, focusing on building those familial bonds instead of only on saving the world. Visually it was more stunning, the game much more interesting to watch than the original and honestly a far superior film, my only complaint was that we did not see Michael Jordan even as a cameo. We would have loved to see him come and join the match towards the end.

Shawshank Redemption

This is the 4k release of the 90’s film starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The story follows two inmates as the develop a bond through acts of kindness and decency. Both Robbins and Freeman give stellar performances in the film. I have seen the film a couple times over the years so there were no surprises in this release but I still find it to be a well written story that is just a little slow at moments.

IT IS RARE FOR ME TO SEE A MOVIE WHEN IT’S STILL IN THEATERS BUT THANKS TO WARNER BROS I WAS ABLE TO CATCH UP ON THOSE I MISSED!

In the Heights

This film follows Usnavi as he tells a group of local kids the story of his dream and how everyone has their own dreams while living in Washington Heights. I went into this film having never seen the play or listened to the music. My family are huge fans of Hamilton though and I went into this hoping to hear more amazing music in a similar style, but only a couple songs reminded me of others from Hamilton and not the ones I loved. Visually the film was stunning and the acting was fantastic but the story was slow and felt more like a week in the life of Usnavi and was not as interesting as I hoped it would be.

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It

This was the first of the Conjuring films I’ve seen with Conjuring actually in the name. The film begins with with the usual duo of, I guess you can call them demon hunters, as they work to exercise a demon from a young boy. I was expecting a campy horror film with too many jump scares but was surprised to find a well written film with the right mixture of tone and suspense.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

This is essentially the director’s cut of Justice League as Snyder originally intended it. Like more director’s cut scenes were added to the original release but this time almost doubling the length of the film. This telling of the story was much more coherent and we ended with a much better telling of the story. It was a good film that was made better and overall a much more enjoyable experience.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 20 Years of Movie Magic

This edition of the film include the Magical Movie Mode which gives viewers the ability to see deleted scenes (many of which have been released previously in other formats) and various commentary from director Chris Columbus. Seeing the deleted scenes was a treat but personally I have never been a fan of live commentary while watching a film, unless of course it is my family doing it similar to the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Overall this is STILL a fantastic film and the added features make the experience fresh but not enough to make it feel like a new film.
