Recently the fine folks at Warner Bros (their home page is here) had sent me copies of some of their movies I missed so that I could share my thoughts on them with you. Don’t Worry Darling

Having been invited to live in the idealized community Victory, Alice and her husband join what seems to be the perfect community. She begins to question things as they start to fall apart around her. The story itself very much reminded me of Hex Wives by Ben Blacker and that’s a good thing. That storyline was amazing. Florence Pugh plays Alice and does a beyond amazing job and is worth seeing the film alone for her. The film as a whole was great as well.

Elvis

Personally I’ve never been a fan of Elvis’ movies or music but many in both sides of my family were. The production value of this film is beyond anything I ever expected. They managed to take a person I never liked and keep me glued to the screen. The cast was fantastic from start to finish. Having never known anything about his personal story other than his death it makes me wonder how accurate was the film? Would I watch this film again? Not likely. Did I enjoy it? I did, surprisingly, I did.

Poltergeist

Growing up I hated scary movies and this was one I avoided because it scared the hell out of friends I considered braver than myself. This is the 4k release of that same classic film and now that I’ve developed an appreciation for the horror genre I can’t think of a better time to watch it. Having watched it finally I didn’t find it particularly frightening but was impressed the quality of the effects for when this film was first produced. The finale was really impressive to say the least and I enjoyed the movie overall.

The Lost Boys

This is the cult classic film all about vampires in a small town. I had seen it only once previously and thought it wasn’t bad but watching it again in 4k it was much better than I remembered. Now it’s time to get my wife to watch it.

DC League of Super Pets

This family film follows Krypto as he deals with Superman’s falling in love and what it means as the pet of the Man of Steel. The animation was top notch and the film was great fun.

Dune

This film is the first half of the latest adaptation of the novel but by far the most faithful we have yet to receive. This was always one of my favorite series and I only had one complaint- that we didn’t receive the full adaptation in a single release. I would have gladly sat through the full 4-6 hours it would have taken to watch it in it’s entirety.

Matrix: Resurrections

In the previous Matrix film Neo and Trinity sacrificed themselves to save the day. The film picks up with a video game designer who looks like Neo with flashes of events from the previous films and it seems like these are all part of a video game he designed. Things get crazier as we dive deeper into this meta rabbit hole and it was a fantastic ride all the way until the end.

The Batman

All heroes have to start somewhere and this is the Batman’s start. His first “super villain” and his first major case, all before the gadgets and masking of his voice. Sure it is yet another retelling of his origin but in the end this film was a fantastic story and was told wonderfully. I hope this same creative team gets the chance to do more.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

This is the first film since we had Depp replaced and yet Ezra Miller still kept his role. The film follows Dumbledore as he brings together a team to fight Grindelwald and along the way clash with his follows and encounter new and old beasts. I continue to love the films in this universe but wish that we could have done so with maintaining the original cast.

Dog

Army Ranger Briggs and a dog named Lulu travel towards a funeral and along the way have to survive each other. The film does something that has been ignored for too long, focus on the psychological damage and necessity for healing after experiencing war. For this alone it is worth a watch but it is an amusing buddy comedy otherwise.

We have returned for Part 10 and no better way to celebrate this milestone than to go big with The Outsiders, Cry Macho, Malignant, the Many Saints of Newark and the Mad Max film collection.

The Outsiders

The original film does not hold a candle to the book but this edition of the film also comes with the Complete Novel edition so you can actually watch the entirety of the story. With this addition it makes it much better but even then I still preferred the actual novel to the film.

Cry Macho

This was an odd film for me. I am not typically a fan of Clint Eastwood as a writer, actor or director but somehow I still give his films a chance. I went into this expecting to dislike it but hoping it would surprise me like The Mule did. After finishing it I felt it was okay at best but when describing it to my wife the next morning I realized there was a lot to it that I did enjoy. The film follows a aging cowboy that is sent to Mexico to retrieve the son of a rancher he sometimes worked for. Begrudgingly he goes and finds the boy and works towards bringing him to his father, along the way falling in love with a small community and it’s people. After analyzing the film I must admit it was surprisingly good.

Malignant

As time goes on I am learning to appreciate horror films and the trailers for this film looked fantastic. The story follows a person with some abilities and horribly disfigured is reportedly euthanized in the opening scene but not before killing several members of the hospital staff. Fast forward several years Madison is pregnant and had a long day of work at the hospital. Responding to her being abused a mysterious killer appears and murders her boyfriend. She is then tortured as she can somehow see the killer’s actions as he murders the people who attempted to kill him many years prior. This was a fantastic film that had some very impressive effects when Madison begins to see where the killer is, blending the room she is in with the room the killer is. This film is worth watching for the effects alone but coupled with an interesting story and a strong cast and you have a winner.

The Many Saints of Newark

I have never seen even one episode of The Sopranos but seeing how Tony became the mob boss was intriguing. The cast of this film were fantastic and despite not knowing the source material it was still an enjoyable film.

Mad Max film collection

Growing up I thought there were only two Mad Max films prior to Fury Road- Beyond Thunderdome and Road Warrior. I had no idea the film that started it all even existed- Mad Max. Getting to watch them again was a treat but none of them compare to Fury Road in my opinion.

In the Heights

This film follows Usnavi as he tells a group of local kids the story of his dream and how everyone has their own dreams while living in Washington Heights. I went into this film having never seen the play or listened to the music. My family are huge fans of Hamilton though and I went into this hoping to hear more amazing music in a similar style, but only a couple songs reminded me of others from Hamilton and not the ones I loved. Visually the film was stunning and the acting was fantastic but the story was slow and felt more like a week in the life of Usnavi and was not as interesting as I hoped it would be.

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It

This was the first of the Conjuring films I’ve seen with Conjuring actually in the name. The film begins with with the usual duo of, I guess you can call them demon hunters, as they work to exercise a demon from a young boy. I was expecting a campy horror film with too many jump scares but was surprised to find a well written film with the right mixture of tone and suspense.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

This is essentially the director’s cut of Justice League as Snyder originally intended it. Like more director’s cut scenes were added to the original release but this time almost doubling the length of the film. This telling of the story was much more coherent and we ended with a much better telling of the story. It was a good film that was made better and overall a much more enjoyable experience.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 20 Years of Movie Magic

This edition of the film include the Magical Movie Mode which gives viewers the ability to see deleted scenes (many of which have been released previously in other formats) and various commentary from director Chris Columbus. Seeing the deleted scenes was a treat but personally I have never been a fan of live commentary while watching a film, unless of course it is my family doing it similar to the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Overall this is STILL a fantastic film and the added features make the experience fresh but not enough to make it feel like a new film.

Mortal Kombat

The Mortal Kombat tournament summons champions from all over the planet and pits them against the champions from outworld. If the Earthly champions are defeated then armies from outworld will be able to invade and eventually conquer the planet. My expectations for this film were a little spread out on this. I expected to see some awesome fights and graphics but for the story I didn’t expect anything award worthy. Every expectation I had was met perfectly.

Those Who Wish Me Dead

This is a film adaptation of a novel and follows a young boy that tries to escape the men that killed his father for knowing too much. We never quite find out exactly what he knew but that isn’t integral to the story. The boy meets Angelina’s character, a fire jumper that is stationed at a lone tower, after her tower is struck by lightning and together they begin a trek through the forest to help him get in touch with news stations. This movie was filmed quite well and the cast were top of their game. Despite the great direction and cast the story I found this film to be lacking in anything that makes it really stand out. I want my films to entertain me or surprise me and this film did neither.

Wrath of Man

Guy Ritchie has been one of THE best directors and when my contact at Warner Bros offered this film to us to review I jumped at the chance. Wrath of Man follows H as he takes a job as a crewmen on an armored truck and as the story unfolds we learn that there is more to him than meets the eye when he stops an armed robbery without a scratch. The film was absolutely brilliant. Ritchie’s control of the story is phenomenal and Statham delivered one of his best performances, ever!

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

This is the original story starring Gene Wilder in 4k and is just as disturbing as it was when I was a child. In 4k it is more vivid than ever and watching it again I can appreciate the stellar performance by Wilder.

Space Jam

Space Jam is one of those films that you remember fondly and as an adult give it another chance and watch with your children. The problem with the film is not the story or the performances but the fact that these days staple characters like Bugs or Daffy are rarely seen and today’s children aren’t really interested in them at all. They have not invested hours upon hours in watching these characters. Some of their antics may not carry over as well in today’s culture but for the most part they were fun. It was great to see these characters return and share them with the family but I was the only one on the couch that seemed to enjoy the film.

Tom and Jerry the Movie

This film starts as you’d expect, following one of our human characters and no Tom or Jerry to be seen. Chloe Grace Moretz hustles her way into a position at a swanky hotel so she can catch a glimpse of her favorite social media couple. This is about when our animated duo are brought into the story, Jerry Mouse sneaks into the same hotel and Tom is hired on to remove the mouse from the building. As to be expected things go pear shaped quite quickly and the two must redeem themselves to make things right. This isn’t one of those films where you are going to marvel at the performances or even the animation quality but if you are looking for a film that perfectly captures the look and feel of a classic Tom and Jerry feature then this will be a great film to watch with the family.

Godzilla Vs Kong

Since the last Godzilla movie the planet has been heading closer to utopia and the other titans are helping it do so. The threat of these titans though is always there- when will one of them attack or level a city? Some big corporations are afraid of the answer to this question and begin constructing a weapon capable of taking the King of the Monsters down. The same time this is going on Kong himself wants free of his containment and some scientists devise a way to transport him, knowing that the moment Kong is free Godzilla will hunt him down. This story feels more like a true sequel to the recent Kong movie with a Godzilla cameo than a sequel to the more recent Godzilla movies. There is some fascinating science discussed in the film such as Hollow Earth theory that inspired me to do some research of my own. Overall this was an enjoyable action film that put the focus on the wrong titan, or at least that’s my opinion.

Wonder Woman 1984

Gal Gadot returns for the sequel to perhaps the best movie in the current DC Cinematic Universe. Diana is a museum curator in 1984, their staff procures a mystical artifact that makes your deepest wish comes true. The pacing of the film was much slower than expected or compared to the original film. The acting and effects were top notch and this film was quite good despite the pacing.

The Little Things

Washington plays a former homicide detective that joins an up and coming detective (Malek) on the hunt of an emerging serial killer. This killer targets young women, it’s been done before, and after a false lead the two picks up on Leto’s trail. For a murder mystery it feels like too many answers are given without having to really search for them resulting in a slow film that is missing the incentives to keep watching despite a fantastic cast.

Judas and the Black Messiah

This film follows the rise of a former car thief through the ranks of the Black Panthers in Chicago to become the bodyguard of Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Illinois chapter and founder of the Rainbow Coalition. As the name of the film implies Fred is the Messiah and the car their, William O’Neil, the Judas of the story and eventual informant for the FBI. Both of these leading actors deliver a commanding performance as I expected and delivered an enjoyable film that gives us a fresh look at the organization of the Black Panthers.

Recently the fine folks at Warner Bros (their home page is here) had sent me a code to one of the movies I missed so that I could share my thoughts on it with you. For the first part of this series we talked about Scoob, Birds of Prey, The Way Back, Goonies 4K, Beetlejuice 4K, Full Metal Jacket, Sherlock Holmes 4K and Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows 4K. We are back again with Part 2 to talk about V for Vendetta 4K, 300 4K, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy 4K, The Hobbit Trilogy 4K, Blade 4K, Bill and Ted Face the Music, Tenet and The Wolf of Snow Hollow.

V for Vendetta 4K

This movie follows a dystopian future of the United Kingdom where church and state are one and the same. Evie breaks curfew and is recued by a secretive hero- V. V spends the next year on a path to tear down the corrupt government that created him. It has always been an all time favorite film of mine and managed to look even better in 4K!

300 4K

300 is one of those guilty pleasure storylines for me. I have always loved the look and style of the Spartans and when Frank Miller wrote the comic I had to pick it up. When this film first hit theaters I was able to go and enjoyed it. Seeing it again but in 4k on my big screen made me wish I made some popcorn because it had that same feeling I missed with going to theaters.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy 4K

This is Peter Jackson’s trilogy as it is meant to be seen in glorious 4k. It comes with both the original theatrical release and the extended versions. These films have always been visually stunning with a fantastic cast and story. The extended cuts though add many scenes I’ve never seen that add some depth to the story that was not necessary but made for a great time anyway.

The Hobbit Trilogy 4K

This is the second Tolkien trilogy and once again comes with both the theatrical releases and the extended versions. The first two I was able to enjoy in theater but never saw the third. Until we received our review copies I still hadn’t seen it. This was the perfect chance. We sat down and began watching one after the other (focusing more on the extended cuts) and had a great time. Of course the extras are not essential to the story but there were some great moments that we hadn’t seen before.

Blade 4K

This was the first Marvel film I had ever seen and even then had no idea he was even a Marvel character. All I knew was he was a badass hero that killed vampires. This movie is a bit dated (last time I saw it was on DVD) but the 4k edition looks so much better than I expect from a film that came out in the 90s. It was so much fun I hope that Warner Bros does the same with the two sequels.

Bill and Ted Face the Music

With the Bill and Ted franchise there will always be a soft spot in my heart. It was what first got me interested in the concept of time travel. The first two films you get to hear about this show that unites the world but this film promises we will get to see it. They know that they are approaching the deadline to have it ready and decide to travel through time once again to steal it from themselves. My expectations were quite low for this film. Trailers did not truly do it justice. I absolutely loved this film and thought it was the perfect ending to the series.

Tenet

Tenet is a spy film that lays the fate of the world on the shoulders of one man, but it has one defining characteristic that makes it stand out. Conceptually it is very much time travel film without the same control of time travel. Several scenes are replayed multiple times from different angles as time moves weirdly through the film. The cast is fantastic and as always Nolan tells a brilliant film. Well worth the watch.

The Wolf of Snow Hollow

Written and starring Jim Cummings this horror film follows a small mountain community dealing with either a brutal killer or a monster. They slowly piece together that the marks on the victims are similar to a dog or wolf and the town starts to think a werewolf is on the hunt. It can be a bit campy at times but handles the serious scenes quite well. Cummings does both a brilliant job as the Sheriff and writer of this film, I’m honestly surprised it wasn’t better known. In fact I have yet to see anyone really talking about the film and that’s too bad.
