IT IS RARE FOR ME TO SEE A MOVIE WHEN IT’S STILL IN THEATERS BUT THANKS TO WARNER BROS I WAS ABLE TO CATCH UP ON THOSE I MISSED!

Recently the fine folks at Warner Bros (their home page is here) had sent me copies of some of their movies I missed so that I could share my thoughts on them with you. For the first part of this series we talked about Scoob, Birds of Prey, The Way Back, Goonies 4K, Beetlejuice 4K, Full Metal Jacket, Sherlock Holmes 4K and Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows 4K. Part 2 ‘twas massive and discussed V for Vendetta 4K, 300 4K, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy 4K, The Hobbit Trilogy 4K, Blade 4K, Bill and Ted Face the Music, Tenet and The Wolf of Snow Hollow. Part 3 talked about Wonder Woman 1984, The Little Things and Judas and the Black Messiah. Part 4 discussed Tom and Jerry the Movie and Godzilla Vs Kong. Part 5 was all about Wrath of Man, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Space Jam. Part 6 had discussed Mortal Kombat and Those Who Wish Me Dead. Part 7 discussed In the Heights, The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 20 Years of Movie Magic edition. Part 8 discussed A Clockwork Orange, Space Jam: A New Legacy and Shawshank Redemption. Part 9 talked about The Suicide Squad and Reminiscence. Part 10 discussed The Outsiders, Cry Macho, Malignant, the Many Saints of Newark and the Mad Max film collection. Part 11 talked about Dune, Matrix: Resurrections, The Batman, Dog and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Part 12 discussed Elvis, DC League of Super Pets, The Lost Boys and Poltergeist. Part 13 shared some classics with 8-Bit Christmas, Casablanca, A Christmas Story, Three Thousand Years of Longing, The Polar Express, Elf and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Part 14 had Don’t Worry Darling and we’ve returned for Part 15 and Black Adam!

Black Adam

This is the final installment of the current iteration of the DCCU after the changes at Warner Bros and the first to include Black Adam. Knowing how The Rock tends to play comedic roles I was expecting this very serious character to be more campy that he would be in the comics. I am happy to say this is not the case. He gave the character the look and feel we hoped for from the comics. I didn’t know much about Adam’s history other than him being tied to Shazam in some way so getting to see this in depth made the character more interesting. The story follows Adam’s return to the world as he is called to save his country from tyrants once again. With the serious tones of the story, great effects and some better acting than we normally see in a DC film I thought this one was a total win!

Recently the fine folks at Disney Studios (their home page is here) had sent me codes to several of the movies I missed so that I could share my thoughts on them with you. With Part 1 we were taking a look at the live action version of Mulan. Part 2 discussed Soul and Raya and the Last Dragon. Part 3 looked at the live action story of Cruella. Part 4 discussed Luca and Part 5 talked about Jungle Cruise. Part 6 discussed Encanto and Part 7 talked about Turning Red. Part 8 covered Lightyear and we’ve returned for Part 9 with Strange World!

Strange World

The story starts with an adventuring father and son duo as they search to reach the other side of a mountain. Jaeger (the father) wants to continue on the mission while Searcher (the son) wants to take a plant that generates electricity back to their home as an end to the adventure. Jaeger decides to continue the mission and leaves the party. Fast-forward 25 years and Searcher has become a farmer and responsible for pioneering the future. However the plants begin to lose their efficacy and Searcher must return to the place his father left him to find out why.

The animation quality is fantastic and the world the studio created is absolutely stunning. Overall the acting was great but I’m not a big fan of Gyllenhaal and think Searcher would have been better cast with someone else. There were two things I thought were handled wonderfully by the film. The first is that Searcher’s son has a male love interest and the film treats it as they would have if it were any other heterosexual love interest without making it obvious that it was what they were doing. The second is that the dog is missing a leg and there are characters with other disabilities like one being confined to a wheelchair. Sure the dog doesn’t have a speaking role but subtle character details like this mean a lot for those that don’t normally see themselves represented and they should have the ability to seem themselves in the characters they are watching just like everyone else.

I watched the film with my youngest and once finished asked her what she thought, she said it was “meh”. I should note that she has watched it multiple times since and really enjoys it. I thought the film was great both visually and in terms of story. I was shocked by how poorly the film did in theaters and suspect it had more to do with either blatant homophobia, racism or the fact that many people these days are under financial strain and waiting for the film to hit streaming services like Disney+.

Don’t Worry Darling

Having been invited to live in the idealized community Victory, Alice and her husband join what seems to be the perfect community. She begins to question things as they start to fall apart around her. The story itself very much reminded me of Hex Wives by Ben Blacker and that’s a good thing. That storyline was amazing. Florence Pugh plays Alice and does a beyond amazing job and is worth seeing the film alone for her. The film as a whole was great as well.

Amsterdam

This film follows a doctor and his lawyer/partner as they investigate the death of the man who created their regiment. As they dig deeper into the mystery things get more deadly. The cast is full of big names and they were all fantastic. So good in fact that I would be shocked if many were not nominated for Oscars this year. The movie too. As a whole it was a great film and I couldn’t stop watching.

Barbarian

The story centers around an AirBnB that has a sinister secret, a passage that leads to catacombs where something lurks. The name of the film didn’t make much sense to me but a random TikTok I saw explained it in a way that made sense- it is almost a phonetic anagram for AirBnB. Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgard were fantastic but were really the only members of the cast that were. Overall the buildup in tension was well crafted but once the climax hit the rest went downhill from there. The story was interesting to start and a disappointment by the end.

See How They Run

Despite the fact that this is officially the third film of this title this is an entirely original story. Centered around the murder of a film director who was going to direct the film adaptation of a play that was based on a book by Agatha Christie. Following the traditional Christie process for the story the film is a classic whodunit where the least likeable person is killed and every character had reason enough to do it. The cast did a fantastic job and at many points the story shifted away from the exact direction I thought it was going and that almost never happens. Typically murder mysteries don’t entertain me much because I quickly pick out who the killer is and almost the entire film I doubted my instinct. I was right in the end but they did a fantastic job fooling me.

Elvis

Personally I’ve never been a fan of Elvis’ movies or music but many in both sides of my family were. The production value of this film is beyond anything I ever expected. They managed to take a person I never liked and keep me glued to the screen. The cast was fantastic from start to finish. Having never known anything about his personal story other than his death it makes me wonder how accurate was the film? Would I watch this film again? Not likely. Did I enjoy it? I did, surprisingly, I did.

Poltergeist

Growing up I hated scary movies and this was one I avoided because it scared the hell out of friends I considered braver than myself. This is the 4k release of that same classic film and now that I’ve developed an appreciation for the horror genre I can’t think of a better time to watch it. Having watched it finally I didn’t find it particularly frightening but was impressed the quality of the effects for when this film was first produced. The finale was really impressive to say the least and I enjoyed the movie overall.

The Lost Boys

This is the cult classic film all about vampires in a small town. I had seen it only once previously and thought it wasn’t bad but watching it again in 4k it was much better than I remembered. Now it’s time to get my wife to watch it.

DC League of Super Pets

This family film follows Krypto as he deals with Superman’s falling in love and what it means as the pet of the Man of Steel. The animation was top notch and the film was great fun.

Recently the fine folks at Marvel Entertainment (their home page is here) had sent me a code to one of the movies I missed so that I could share my thoughts on it with you. Thor: Love and Thunder

The fourth film in the Thor series follows Thor as he attempts to track and defeat Gorr the God Butcher. He enlists the help of Korg, Valkyrie and Jane in the quest. The start of the film is a bit over the top, some will say a bit too over the top but considering where Thor is in his life it feels like a midlife crisis and I feel that is intentional. Visually the film is stunning and even that is used to help tell the story (you’ll see what I mean when you watch the film). The characters dive deeper into who they are and it makes for a much more beautiful story. I have to admit I thought this was the best Thor film yet and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

The Bob’s Burgers Movie

Having never seen a single episode of the show before I didn’t know what to expect, however, many friends rave about how great it is. After watching it I spoke to several of those friends and they all absolutely loved it, I however did not. I suspect it was built up too much by them and having never grown to enjoy the show I didn’t love the movie. It was an entertaining movie, good enough even to convince me to give the show a chance, until then the jury is still out on this one for me.

Death on the Nile

The only thing I knew about this film prior to seeing it, other than who was among the cast, was that it was the direct sequel to Murder on the Orient Express. This released soon after the negative press hit regarding Armie Hammer and was surprised that reshoots weren’t done prior to the actual release. I don’t know if it was how he played his character or just the actor himself but watching he came off just slimy felt dirty watching him. I thought he heavily detracted from the film as a whole but when not focused around him it pulled me in as I tried to piece the clues together myself. Comparing the two films I thought this one as a whole was the better story and hope that we see more films centered around Hercule.

Nightmare Alley

After torching his family home, Stan wanders around a carnival, eventually taking a show and leaving without payment. After getting caught he accepts a job doing manual labor and eventually learns the art of mentalism. Throughout his mentalism performances he is reminded to never perform what they refer to as a spook show but don’t give too much insight into why. He eventually leaves the carnival to take his mentalism act tot he big city and gets an offer of a large sum to start performing these shows. Greed is the cause of many men’s fall from success and watching as things start to unravel make this film worth the watch as tries to pull himself out of trouble while being manipulated from outside sources. The acting is fantastic but the overall story failed to impress.

West Side Story

This was directed by Steven Spielberg, telling the story from the classic play. Having never seen the original material I can’t say with certainty if anything changed between the original and this adaptation but I can say I did not enjoy the film. The cast did a great job but the story felt like a retelling of Romeo and Juliet but based in the slums of a US city.
